Desktop Client: Why do double-byte (Japanese or Chinese) characters disappear after typing?

Typing double-byte characters, regardless of the language, requires you to press Enter to commit them.  If you don't press Enter they are discarded. So, for example, if you are entering Chinese in a diagram in the Languages dialog box, ensure you click the Enter key after typing the characters; before moving on to the next box (cell) in the dialog.
