Lean types

A Lean type marks a diagram-defined custom property (DDCP) so value stream mapping (VSM) uses it in the timeline and summary-box calculations.

Prerequisites

  • A diagram of type Value Stream Map.
  • The property must be a DDCP — repository-level custom properties don't support Lean types.

Reference: Lean types and allowed mappings

The available Lean types are: Availability, Changeover Time, Defect, Inventory Amount, Inventory Time, Non-value-add Time, Operators, % Complete And Accurate, Processing Time, Uptime, and Value Add Time.

Which Lean types a property can take depends on its property type:

Property typeAllowed Lean types
PercentNone, Availability, Defect, % Complete And Accurate, Uptime
Duration / TimeNone, Changeover Time, Inventory Time, Non-value-add Time, Processing Time, Value Add Time
NumericNone, Inventory Amount, Operators

A property type that supports no Lean type defaults to none and is ignored in VSM calculations.

Steps

Set a Lean type on a new DDCP

  1. On a VSM diagram, open the Custom Properties panel and select the gear icon, tooltip Manage shape properties.
  2. Click Create property and fill in the name fields.
  3. Choose a property type that allows a Lean type (see the mappings above).
  4. Select the type in the Lean Type dropdown, then click Create.

Change a Lean type on an existing DDCP

  1. In the same Manage shape properties dialog, edit the property.
  2. If the property type allows it, select a different type in the Lean Type dropdown, then save.

A property type with an allowed mapping can change freely between any of its Lean types. Lean types can't be deleted, but setting one to none removes its effect on VSM diagrams. DDCP on diagrams that predate VSM — or diagrams whose type is changed to VSM — can be updated to set a Lean type.
