Performance management

A Performance Indicator is a repository object that records a measurable result — a rate, a count, a duration, a cost — against the part of your model it measures. You attach indicators to processes, strategies, capabilities, or other repository items, enter or collect data for them, and read the result as a traffic-light rating, a chart, a table, or a Performance Tree on a dashboardDashboard A configurable view in Process360 Live that aggregates KPIs, charts, and filters across one or more processes for stakeholders to monitor performance..

Overview

Performance management in iGrafx Process DesignProcess Design The discipline of explicitly modeling business processes to document, analyze, and optimize them. In Process360 Live, process design is the authoring side that complements mining's data-driven view. is built from four pieces:

  • A Performance Indicator holds the data: a series of values over time, values per category, an aggregate of other indicators, or a nightly report result. Its settings define the unit, the rating system, and the limits and targets the values are judged against.
  • A rating turns the indicator's current value into a traffic-light color, so a reader sees at a glance whether the result is acceptable.
  • Charts and Tables are repository objects that display the data of one or more Performance Indicators — as a line, bar, pie, or gauge chart, or as a formatted table with limit, target, and trend markers.
  • The Performance Tree is a dashboardDashboard A configurable view in Process360 Live that aggregates KPIs, charts, and filters across one or more processes for stakeholders to monitor performance. gadget that shows a folder hierarchy of Performance Indicators with their traffic lights, aggregating child ratings upward so a whole area's health rolls up into one color.

The Performance Indicator's own page shows the same information in miniature: the Performance Indicator tab shows the current rating with the current and previous values, the Data tab holds the data points, and the Chart tab charts them.

Key concepts

  • Indicator type — a label that classifies what the indicator tracks. The type describes intent; it doesn't change how the indicator behaves.   • Type of Data — how the indicator stores its values. See Types of data.
  • Rating system — the color scheme that grades those values. See Rating systems.
  • Limits — the value ranges that the rating system colors. Each set of limits applies for a date range, so thresholds can change over time while history keeps its original grading.
  • Target — a goal value for a date range. Charts and tables can plot it next to the actual values.
  • Weighting — how much the indicator counts when ratings aggregate in a Performance Tree, from Very low to Very high. An indicator weighted None is left out of that aggregation, and its traffic light shows gray in the Performance Tree. Weighting doesn't change the rating anywhere else: the indicator's own Performance panel, diagram display fields, charts, and tables all keep showing its real color.
  • Rollup indicator — a Performance Indicator whose data is computed from child indicators (for example, a monthly average across regions). Children must be one of the three types that produce a numeric series, so a rollup can take another rollup as a child. A child of any other type is skipped without warning. Give the children the same unit, or the aggregate is meaningless.

Types of data

An indicator's Type of Data decides what a data point looks like and what the indicator can do with it:

Time-based (Numeric) is the default. The three types that produce a numeric series are the only ones that can carry limits and targets — and so the only ones that can be rated — and the only ones a Rollup indicator accepts as children. Time-based (Text) is for results that are read rather than graphed, so it has no Chart tab.

Changing the type doesn't discard anything: data for every type persists in the repository, so you can switch back and forth without losing what you entered.

Rating systems

The letters of a rating system name its colors, read upward along the value axis. The system you choose also decides how many boundary values a set of limits needs:

RG and GR have no amber band, so every value is either acceptable or not. RAGAR colors both extremes red, for a measure that should stay inside a range rather than climb.

How ratings aggregate

A Performance Tree shows one traffic light per folder, computed from the indicators inside it:

  • Each rated indicator contributes its color, weighted by its Weighting setting. Subfolders contribute their own aggregated color at a fixed medium weight, so the calculation is recursive up the hierarchy.
  • The weighted average decides the folder's color: green when results sit clearly in the green range, red when they sit clearly in the red range, amber in between. A result exactly between two colors shows the worse one.
  • Indicators weighted None, unrated indicators, and indicators with no data are left out.
  • An indicator with Preempt other performance indicators enabled overrides the average: if its own rating is amber or red, the aggregate shows that color regardless of how the others rate. This has no effect on an indicator weighted None, which the aggregation leaves out entirely.

Aggregation only counts the indicators the viewer is allowed to see, so two users with different permissions can see different colors for the same folder.

Licensing

Performance management requires the PRC (Performance, Risk and Control) Module. With the module in place, what each user can do depends on their license: viewing performance data is open to all license types, editing indicator data requires more, and creating indicators, charts, and tables more still — see the License capability matrix for the exact breakdown.
