Restore a Microsoft SQL Server database backup

Restore a repository database from a SQL Server backup, then register it in the platform.

Prerequisites

  • The backup file, and access to Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio on the database server.

Steps

Restore the database

  1. Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.

  2. Right-click the Databases folder and select Restore Database.

  3. In the dialog, next to Device, click and add the backup file.

  4. Set the target database — pick an existing one from the dropdown, or type a new name to create one during the restore.

    warning

Restoring over an existing database can cause data loss in the target database.

    note

If the target is a database in use by a running platform application server, stop the service before the restore and start it again after it completes. This isn't needed when restoring to a new or empty database.

  5. Adjust the Files section if your environment needs it, then click OK.

  6. Open Security → Logins and either map the user you'll connect with to this database, or create a new one.

Register the repository

Register the restored repository in the platform.

If registration fails with a message that the repository is already registered — for example because you moved it from another installation or cloned it — you'll need the extra steps for a moved or cloned repository. Contact the iGrafx support portal if you're unsure.
